Natural hot springs aka onsen are popular in Japan. There are many types of hot spring and each hot spring are differentiated by the mineral dissolved in the water. During our road trip in Hokkaido, we made a stop at Obihiro just to enjoy its unique hot spring. There are many places to enjoy the onsen such as visiting the public bathhouse or like us, choose a hot spring ryokan. After comparing a few, we decide to go with Kangetsuen Hotel as it looks beautiful and is reasonably priced
Located 15 minutes drive from the city Kangetsuen Hotel is the perfect getaway from city life. The hotel faces a Tokachi River but the view was mediocre. Unfortunately, there are not many shops nearby and one has to purchase the half board buffet set or travel to Obihiro city for dinner. We read online that the hotel provides a shuttle service. Do check with the hotel on schedule and pickup point.
Checking in was fuss free. We were escorted to our room by the staff and she was lovely. Turn out that she is from Indonesia and my dad enjoyed chatting with her in Bahasa. Personally, I feel that this is a lovely gesture by the hotel, overcoming language barriers and bringing a smile to the guest.
Room
We book a traditional room with Futon sleeping style and the room came with huge toilets. Unfortunately, We didn’t use the bathroom because we spend most of our time in the Onsen. Although the room is dated, it is still amazing! We requested for early setup of futon so that my parents can take a quick nap before we set out for dinner in Obihiro city. The room we booked didn’t come with any breakfast or dinner. We visited the city for the super awesome Buta Don!
Facilities
The hot spring in Kangetsuen is actually brown and contains a lot of nutrient from the plant. The onsen in Obihiro also won the title beauty onsen (美人の湯)! Love it when there is an indoor and outdoor onsen! Other than the Beauty Onsen, the hotel has a reading lounge for guest who wants to enjoy reading with a cup of tea.
